Congressman Cantor Statement On House Measure To Prevent Devastating Defense Cuts And Reduce The Deficit
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-07) released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 5652, The Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act:
“The President and both parties in Congress agree the across-the-board spending cuts in the sequester threaten our national defense and must be replaced. Today, the House passed our plan to replace these cuts with responsible spending reforms to protect our troops and bring down the debt. Preventing harmful cuts to the military is especially important for Virginia, where we have so many men and women committed to the defense of our nation. This plan ensures that we maintain our fiscal discipline and commitment to reducing out-of-control government spending, while making sure our top priority is national security.
“I commend the six House committees and their chairmen for their hard work to identify common-sense savings and thank the House Budget Committee for working to advance this measure. Unfortunately, the President and his party seem to be choosing to sit idly by and let the devastating cuts in the sequester take effect, rather than putting forward a plan of their own or supporting ours. The House has offered a plan to protect our troops and maintain a robust defense community, and now the Senate must do the same."
